No matter the subject, there is usually at least one prerequisite college class that seems undesirable to prospective students. Unfortunately, many students entering college for the first time are unaware of a very helpful solution to the issue of facing undesirable prerequisite classes: “CLEP out.”

This short phrase is commonly used when referring to testing out of a class and CLEP refers to College Level Examination Program. CLEP exams are designed to test a student’s knowledge level in different areas. The idea is similar to the concept of taking placement tests in high school and being placed at a higher grade. Students who CLEP out of several subjects are able to skip the same amount of prerequisite classes as tests they take. CLEP exams are excellent for students eager to pursue their major’s required courses and forgo the prerequisites.

With many CLEP test options, students no longer need to pay thousands of dollars for a class which will be a dread to complete. The option of taking CLEP tests is becoming very attractive with the rising costs of attending college mixing with the pinch each person feels in this economic crisis. Compared to the price of a class and the required textbooks which must be purchased, those who choose to CLEP out of the class will be saving a tremendous amount of money. The cost per CLEP is $77.00, after July 1, 2010. Compared to the cost of a typical class, CLEPs offer great savings.

Another advantage for those who choose to CLEP out of prerequisites is the amount of time saved. Many students will CLEP out of enough classes to shave off a few semesters or more of prerequisites off their degree. Every prospective student should consider the CLEP as an alternative to the classroom for those classes that they’d rather not take.
